A Self-Funded Health Insurance Plan is a type of Health  plan, which incorporates a Third-Party Administrator, Stop-Loss Carrier, Network, and Claims Fund.

Traditional Group Health Insurance plans bundle these three services together but with a Self-Funded Health Plan, you purchase these separately.

Below are some benefits of a Self-Funded Health Plan:

  • Employers Keep Unused Claims Fund.
  • Claims are Transparent
  • Many Self-Funded plans use a national PPO Network.
  • Small-Group Self-Funded plans (less than 50 employees) don't have to comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Community-rating rules.

Traditionally, Self-Funded plans were only for large employers (250+) but recent regulations have made it more viable for smaller employers.
